Almost 2 million Muslims worldwide celebrate Ramadan each year. It’s the ninth month in the Islamic calendar – and the holiest. As part of observing it, individuals partake in a fast from dawn until sunset. For those marking it, it’s a time of self-discipline and remembering the importance of empathising with others.
In 2026, Ramadan falls between 17 February and 18 March. And there are more benefits to spending it in the UK’s capital than you may have realised.
Here are some of them:
- If you have friends or family in London, Ramadan could present the perfect opportunity to spend time with them, especially as you enjoy the end of fasting and coming together at Ei al-Fitr or share an Iftar meal after a day without food or drink.
- The UK’s cool temperatures can make fasting a more comfortable experience. In February and throughout the first two or three weeks of March, while the weather can be moderate, it’s still not yet officially spring.
- The sunrise and sunset times when Ramadan falls this year make for relatively reasonable eating times. Even on March 18, for example, it is dark by 6.15 pm in London. Meanwhile, sunrise during the early part of the month is not until shortly before 7 am, so you won’t be getting up halfway through the night to eat.
- London is a diverse, global city offering myriad cultural attractions all year round, including world-class shopping for all the Ramadan essentials and new outfits for Eid you could want, plus every movie, show, concert and art variety you can think of. (And a few you probably can’t.)
- Areas such as East London come alive during Ramadan after the sun goes down, with food stalls, dessert parlours and bubble-tea outlets offering multiple options for food. It was also the first city in the West to host Ramadan lights, in places such as the central, iconic Leicester Square.
- There are numerous local mosques and Islamic centres to provide communal prayer and other support at this time of year.
- Large public gatherings, such as the V&A Museum, host open Iftars, encouraging Muslims and non-Muslims alike to eat together, promoting greater understanding of Islam.
- You can make contact with diverse Muslim communities from around the world here, including as a solo traveller – you’ll always be made to feel
Why serviced accommodation makes sense for your London Ramadan stay
If you’re observing Ramadan in London, even if you have friends or family here, they may not have enough room to put you up. And it’s always nice to have some space to call your own.
During these special weeks, you may also want to host people for pre-dawn or after-dark meals and cook for yourself at least some of the time. Plus you’ll want enough space so that everyone can sit comfortably. That can be hard to achieve with just a couple of hotel rooms. Equally, not every hotel will cater, for example, for pre-dawn eating or offer halal options, or even serve inspiring alcohol-free drinks. You could also be faced with set dining times.
Serviced apartments provide roomy, super-comfortable home-from-home accommodation with the choice to eat out or cater for yourself, and to host friends and family at times to suit you. Indeed, it’s hard to think of any alternative providing the same freedom and flexibility as you enjoy London during Ramadan.
